Barry Janusch stepped down from coaching in 2001 and has been the athletic director at Olympic College ever since
Former Olympic College men’s basketball coach and long-time athletic director Barry Janusch is the recipient of this year’s Rex Brown Distinguished Service Award, which goes to someone in the community who has made a commitment to youth and amateur athletics.
Janusch has been a fixture at the Bremerton junior college since he was hired as the Rangers’ 14th men’s basketball coach in 1992. He was 32 when he landed the OC job after seven years as an assistant coach at Idaho State.
Prior to that, the point guard from West Valley of Spokane, played basketball at Clark Community College, Western Oregon, and professionally in Australia. He was the head coach at Clark for one season before moving to Idaho State.
As a coach, Janusch got the Rangers back into the basketball playoffs in his third season. The 1995 Rangers, the first OC team to make it to the championship tournament since 1974, placed sixth at the NWAC tournament. Overall, seven of Janusch’s nine teams qualified for the postseason before he stepped down in 2001 to concentrate on being the Athletic Director. He posted an overall record of 144-111 as his teams played to packed houses at cozy Bremer Student Center Gym. Nine years later, Janusch didn’t have as much success during a two-year stint as a stop-gap coach, posting a 13-35 record.
When he was hired in 1992 at Olympic, Janusch also served as an academic advisor for OC’s athletic teams. He added the title of Athletic Director in 1995. He’s now one of the senior ADs in the Northwest Athletic Conference and he’s still helping OC athletes.
The personable Janusch, described as “a people person,” by former OC Athletic Director Jack Stenjhem, has positively impacted the lives of countless OC athletes over the years. Whether it’s helping with class schedules or providing life lessons, Janusch’s door is always open to the college’s student athletes.
He was inducted into the NWAC’s Roll of Honor in 1994, and is currently an NWAC Executive Board Member and the NWAC Golf Chairman.
Janusch is instrumental in helping keep the college connected to the community and worked tirelessly to put together the annual Kitsap Athletic Roundtable Scholar/Athlete banquet. With Janusch’s support, OC has helped sponsor the KAR Hall of Fame program and annual high school all-star baseball and softball games.
Janusch and his wife, Arlene, live in Silverdale. They have three children —daughter Lani; sons Max and Eli.
