The North Kitsap Vikings won’t toot their own horn when it comes to their expectations for this season but they don’t have to — plenty of others will.

The Vikings enter the 2019-20 season ranked No. 1 by Scorebook Live and have received plenty of early-season attention. With three returning All-Olympic League players (Shaa Humphrey, MVP, Kobe McMillian, first team, Logan Chmielewski, second team) it’s deserved. But North Kitsap coach Scott Orness would like to see his team earn it on the court, not just in pre-season polls. North is coming off 23-6, sixth-place finish in the 2A state tournament last season and have all the necessary tools to make another long playoff run. Bremerton alum and coach Miah Davis has the Knights clicking early as Port Angeles, Sequim and Kingston should all be in the hunt for playoff spots.

South Kitsap will see a new coach yet a familiar face in Brian Cox. Cox, a SK alum, takes over for long-time coach John Callaghan and is very excited about the team. “We’re going to be an athletic team and I think a fun team to watch play,” Cox said. If seniors Eli Mackie, Kyler Kelso and Gavin Morkert can play well, “we’re going to be in good shape,” he said. The Wolves have some much-needed physicality thanks to KeVaughn Harvey, Sam Canton and Jeremiah Coleman. … The Spartans of Bainbridge return All-Metro honorable mention guard Andrew Ward as well as fellow guards Jacob Kirsch, Alan Ulin and Gus Corsetti. They’ll need strong guard play and a stable defense to compete in the always challenging Metro League.
