A Cory Kane hat trick and 4-point game for Randy Yeakley wasn’t enough for West Sound who returns home this weekend
The West Sound Admirals lost to the Southern Oregon Spartans in a Western States Hockey League Northwest Division series last weekend.
The Spartans beat West Sound 6-3 Friday and 5-4 Saturday in Medford, Ore.
In Friday’s game, the Spartans struck first before West Sound answered on a goal by Cory Kane from David Matusek and Randy Yeakley. After Southern Oregon took a 3-1 lead in the second period, West Sound tied on back-to-back goals by Kane to give the Admirals (0-4) life midway through the period.
But the Spartans (2-0) scored the go-ahead goal with 6:26 left, and then added two insurance goals to secure the win.
Saturday the Admirals stuck with Southern Oregon throughout the game. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead before Randy Yeakley tied it off assists from Cory Kane and Sarp Demirezen. Southern Oregon went up 2-1 less than two minutes later but the line of Yeakley, Kane and Demirezen scored again this time Kane was credited at the 5:22 mark to tie it at 2-2 in the first period.
Southern Oregon’s Pavel Bykov scored in the second period and then added a second goal on the power-play with assists to Yuval Halpert and Jeremy Vaunt Geloof at 17:27 for a 4-2 lead.
After a spate of penalties, the Admirals answered in the third period on a power-play goal of their own — Martin Koval scored on assists from Demirezen and Yeakley to cut the Spartans lead, 4-3. Southern Oregon tallied its last goal from Tristan Fehr at 12:30 and Demirezen added a final goal for the Admirals at 9:26. Demirezen finished with three assists and a goal, Yeakley had two assists and a goal while Admirals goaltender Rader Kocak stopped 36 shots on 41 attempts.
West Sound returns to the Bremerton Ice Arena for a three-game series Friday-Sunday against the Fresno Monsters (3-4) of the Western Division. Friday and Saturday’s games are at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday’s game starting at 2:45 p.m.
