Familiar faces and unexpected newcomers could make a push toward the playoffs for the 2019 volleyball season

West Sound high school volleyball teams will hit the court this week for the start of the 2019 season and there will be some familiar faces and the possibility of some newcomers headed to the playoffs.

The North Kitsap Vikings are vying for their seventh straight Olympic League 2A title and a seventh trip to the state 2A tournament and, until somebody comes along to knock them off, NK should be the team to beat. They return All-Olympic League first teasers Riley Rabedeaux, Noey Barreith and second-teamer Autumn Carver to a program that has dominated the league. Sequim will push NK and an improving North Mason squad should contend for another playoff berth.

Kingston should be in the mix once again for districts and Bremerton sees the return of libero Joleen Quitugua who missed two seasons due to knee injuries.

Central Kitsap has two returning All-South Sound Conference players in outside hitter Baylee Anderson and setter Keahi Sarono among eight varsity returners.

In the competitive Metro League, 3A Bainbridge has a good balance of experience with competitive newcomers that has raised the level of play during practice. Three of those returners include All-Metro League honorable mentions Julia Jakubik and Ava Targett at outside hitter and middle blocker, and Allie Wildsmith at middle blocker.

For the South Kitsap Wolves, a deep team means the injuries that have stymied their growth the last couple of years shouldn’t be an issue.
