Chloe Dygert Owen shows off her mega talent in sweep of Colorado Classic Sunday. Meanwhile, husband Logan Owen, Bainbridge's Kiel Reijnen begin three-week Vuelta a Espana with time trial

Chloe Dygert Owen might be relatively new to the cycling world, the Bremerton resident showed great promise, strength and skill by claiming the first women’s-only Colorado Classic cycling race Sunday.

Dygert Owen, an Olympic silver medalist on the cycling track, said via Fred Dreier’s story in velonews.com that she is just now starting to feel comfortable again after suffering injuries and crashes that took her out of racing in 2018. That showed this week as Dygert Owen dominated her competitors by winning all four stages and claiming all four jerseys.

Dygert Owen’s husband, Logan, meanwhile, opened his first Grand Tour with EF Education First at the Vuelta a Espana in Spain Sunday. Logan Owen, a Bremerton High graduate and multiple cyclocross national champion, and his teammates began the three-week tour with the team time trial. Education First led the TT until they were topped by Team Astana, the eventual winners in 14 minutes, 51 seconds. EF Education First finished seven seconds back in fourth place.

Racing continues Monday.

Kitsap’s connection to the Vuelta a Espana doesn’t end with Owen.

Bainbridge’s Kiel Reijnen is competing for Trek/Segrafredo’s team. It’s likely a first for the peninsula to have two area riders racing in a Grand Tour cycling road race.
