Crosspoint's Alex Weirth and Ethan Heydel are tied for second in the boys 1B/2B tournament in Tumwater
Three-time defending champion Brittany Kwon shot a 67 on the first day of the girls 3A state golf championship at Hawks Prairie Golf Course in Lacey Tuesday.
Kwon, a senior at Central Kitsap, leads the tournament and Lauryn Nguyen of West Seattle by four strokes — she shot a 71. CK’s Imara Bhanji is sitting tied for ninth with Lucy Hanacek of Bainbridge. Both players shot first-round 85s.
Kwon will tee off at 11:03 a.m. Wednesday in the first group. Nguyen tees off at 10:18 a.m.
Central Kitsap leads the team standings with a score of 340, followed by Mercer Island, 342, and Arlington, 386.
In the 1A girls tournament at Tumwater Valley Golf Course, Emily Brown of Klahowya is tied for fifth after carding an opening-round 76. Klahowya’s Kate Streck also made the cut after shooting a 95.
Kingston’s Delaney Olsen is tied for 14th at the 2A girls tournament after shooting an 85 at Meadowwood GC in Spokane. Olsen is the top local qualifier to make the cut. Olympic’s Brilee Triggs (90), Zoie Matheny (91) and Greta Jagodzinske of North Kitsap (93) also made the cut.
Crosspoint’s Ethan Heydel and teammate Alex Weirth are tied for second at the boys 1B/2B tournament, also at Tumwater GC. Heydel and Weirth both shot a 75, and are two-strokes behind leader, Blake Kukula of Ilwaco, who shot a 73. Crosspoint’s George Berens also made the cut.
Weirth will tee off Wednesday at 11:42 a.m. and Heydel in the next group at 11:51 a.m.
At the 4A boys at The Creek at Qualchan GC in Spokane, South Kitsap’s Drew Halili is tied for 12th after shooting an opening 75. For the 2A boys at Liberty Lake, Sequim’s Paul Jacobsen is tied with Lynden’s Jordan Medcalf to lead the field with a 73.
No locals made the final cut in the 1A boys or 2A boys.
