Klahowya’s Drew Dickson was named a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Athlete of the Week on Wednesday for 1A boys soccer.

Dickson, a senior, scored twice for the Eagles in a non-league match against Central Kitsap that ended in a 2-2 tie on Saturday, March 9.

Every week the WIAA recognizes student-athlete for their performances of the previous week, as well as being in good academic standing, based off nominations. 

Basketball: Team Cascade wins All-Star games

At Tuesday’s West Sound Senior High school All-Star basketball girls and boys games, Team Cascade beat Team Puget Sound 44-27 in the girls edition while Team Cascade defeated Team Puget Sound in the boys game, 79-74.

Team Cascade girls included Maddie Pruden, Raelee Moore, Alicia Goetz and Julie Tweiten from North Kitsap as well as Bremerton’s Roxanna Dunklin. Puget Sound consisted of Olympic’s Brilee Triggs and Zoie Matheny, Alannah Mitchell, South Kitsap’s Emma Erickson, Halie Rodriguez and Emily Riehl. Tweiten, who had a half-court shot in NK’s regional game against Anacortes last month, won the 3-point contest while Erickson won the hot-shot event.

For the boys, John Hartford won the hot-shot contest while Sequim’s Nate Despain won the three-point contest. 

South Kitsap’s Callaghan retires

South Kitsap boys basketball coach John Callaghan retired on Wednesday.

Callaghan led the Wolves’ program for 21 seasons, picking up more than 300 wins including a second-place finish at the 4A state tournament in 2003-04, third in 2005-06, fifth in 2002-03, sixth in 2004-05 and eighth in 2001-02. Callaghan led SK to eight tournament appearances in his career.

Spring sports season underway

The North Kitsap boys soccer team picked up a win in its first game of the 2019 season with a 1-0 win over Kingston on Tuesday.

North Mason’s baseball team beat Elma in a non-league game on Monday, 12-1 in five innings. Starting pitcher Brendan Kimbell held Elma at bay with nine strikeouts for the win.
