Kaira Cabato, a freshman at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla., was named a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Cabato, a 2018 Olympic High graduate who plays infield/utility for the Wildcats, played in her first collegiate games over the weekend in the First Pitch Classic in Boca Raton. Cabato had a batting average of .200 in four games, getting two hits against ACC opponent Virginia and St. John’s (N.Y.), respectively, the conference said in a news release.
Cabato also hit two doubles and stole three bases. Defensively she registered four putouts and three assists from both the first base and third base positions.
Bethune’s Kiki Mitchell, also a freshman from Olympic, got her first collegiate start at second base. Mitchell had a hit and also the first putout of the game, a pop fly foul behind first base against Virginia, a 5-4 win. The Wildcats lost to St. John’s 6-3 and No. 6 Georgia 12-0.
