The Bainbridge Spartans finished second at the Kentridge Invitational on Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Mercer Island won the 32-team meet with 687 points, holding off the Spartans who finished with 664 points.

Kingston finished in 10th place with 201 points.

Kevin Houseman, a Northwestern signee, had a strong time in the 100-yard breaststroke for Bainbridge. Houseman dropped 1.29 seconds from his seeding time and won in 54.35 seconds. Runner-up Evan VanderSluis of Eastlake dropped 3.63 seconds off his time but that wasn’t good enough as he finished far behind Houseman in 57.55. Jude Wenker of Bainbridge was third, Kingston’s Aron Markow was fourth and Bainbridge’s Carter Hall fifth.

Bainbridge’s 200-yard medley relay of Garrett Waite, Kevin Houseman, Andrew Witty and Wenker, won in 1 minute, 35.55 seconds, beating Mercer who touched in second place in 1:37.55. Kingston’s relay placed eighth.

Kingston’s Tim Gallagher was the top seed in the 200 individual medley with an entry time of 1:50.10. Gallagher won the event but was initially disqualified by meet officials for a delayed initiation to his backstroke turn, Kingston coach Mark Van Huis said.

“There is no such rule for high school swimming,” Van Huis said.

Gallagher’s DQ was overturned and he was named the winner. Bainbridge’s Witty finished third behind Collin Ralston of Mercer Island, 1:57.53 to 1:58.11. Bainbridge’s Tyler Stewart was fourth and teammate Ian Lipton was seventh.

In the 50 free, Makai Ingalls of Bainbridge and Justin Robinson of Mercer Island raced to the wall neck-and-neck with Robinson out-touching Ingalls in what could be a pre-curser to the state meet in February. Robinson finished in 21.79 to Ingalls’ 21.82. Kingston’s Aron Markow was eighth.

Kingston’s Ethan Fox placed eighth in the 100 butterfly in 54.50. Curtis’ Patrick Keough won in 50.03.

Wenker earned Bainbridge’s first individual win in the 100 freestyle. Wenker held off Conner Elwyn of Wenatchee as both swam to a sub-47 second finish. Wenker touched the wall in 46.08 to Elwyn’s 46.46. Ingalls was fifth in the event for the Spartans.

Waite of Bainbridge finished eighth in the 500 freestyle in 4:54.74 as Kamiak’s Vlad Gilszmer won in 4:39.67. In the 100 backstroke, Bainbridge’s Lipton finished sixth.

Bainbridge’s 400 free relay of Ingalls, Witty, Waite and Wenker, won in 3:07.61 to beat Mercer Island in 3:08.89. Bainbridge’s B relay was seventh. The Spartans also placed fourth in the 200 free relay while Kingston was sixth.
