The West Sound Admirals junior hockey team now have a trifecta of goaltenders in the fold.
The Admirals announced the addition of goalie Alex Olsson of Sweden in a press release Friday for the 2018-19 Western States Hockey League.
Olsson played for Saffle HC in Sweden’s Division 3 League, and Hudiksvalls HC in Sweden’s U20 Elite League.
Goaltenders Noah Bird and Adam Rousselo signed earlier this summer.
“I am happy with the goaltending we have bought in,” said Admirals general manager Dave Daniello. “Having Alex here rounds out our goalie roster and the competition between the three should be beneficial for everyone. Each of these goaltenders can grab the starting spot on any given day and I am excited to see it unfold.”
Daniello said Olsson came highly recommended.
“I was turned on to Alex by a colleague and I’m sure he won’t disappoint,” he said. “Once he understands what we are looking for from him here in West Sound, I’m sure he will raise everyone’s compete level.”
Olsson said he chose the Admirals because it felt like the right fit for him both on and off the ice.
“I am excited to be part of the Admiral organization from the beginning of a new journey,” Olsson said. “I will do everything I can to help the team to have a successful first season.”
Olsson is the second Swedish player to ink his deal with West Sound.
The Admirals signed Oliwer Stensson last Saturday. Stensson, a forward, played previously for Nykopings HF J20 and J18 teams, scoring 38 goals and 18 assists for 54 points in 52 games last season.
“The reason I chose to play for West Sound Admirals is because I want to take my game to the next level and try to play transatlantic hockey,” Stensson said. “The Admirals seem to be a good club with the right ambitions.”
Daniello said Stensson has good size and is skilled in putting the puck in the net “and when we put his skill with others on the team I think he will help us win some games.”
The Admirals are still looking for billet families to host players this season, as well as volunteers. Contact GM Dave Daniello at firstname.lastname@example.org or 207-542-7899.
