Bainbridge Island Swim Club’s Kevin Houseman placed seventh in the 100-meter breaststroke C final at the Speedo Junior National Championships in Irvine, Calif., Tuesday.
On the first night of the weeklong meet at the William Woollett Aquatics Center — which just held the U.S. National Championships last week— Houseman is just one of five Kitsap swimmers looking to go fast and earn personal best times at a national meet.
Houseman finished the breaststroke in one minute, 4.35 seconds. Houseman had a strong first 50 with a split time of 29.259 but couldn’t hold that pace in the final 50 meters coming home in 34.76. Houseman, who helped the Bainbridge Spartans boys team repeat as the Class 3A state swimming championships last February, is also scheduled to swim in the 200 breaststroke on Friday.
Prelims are at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The entire meet is available by webcast at usaswimming.org.
Tim Gallagher, a Kingston High product who swims for the Poulsbo Piranhas Swim Team and is a multiple state high school champion, is seeded 16th in the 200 backstroke, which is Wednesday, and Friday’s 100 backstroke.
Poulsbo Piranhas’ Nathan Ramey, a North Kitsap incoming senior who was second at the 2A state high school meet in the 200 free in February, will swim in Wednesday’s 400 individual medley and Friday’s 200 breaststroke.
Bainbridge Island Swim Club’s Garrett Waite, also a member of Bainbridge’s two-time state champion, will swim in Wednesday’s 200 backstroke and Friday’s 100 backstroke.
Eleanor Beers is the lone female representing Kitsap. Already a four-time state 2A high school champion for North Kitsap as a sophomore last year, Beers, who swims for Bainbridge Island Swim Club, is scheduled to compete in Wednesday’s 100 freestyle.
