Central Kitsap sophomore James Sanchez won the West Central District 3A title in the 100-yard butterfly Saturday at Henry Foss High School in Tacoma.

Sanchez finished in 53.37 seconds, holding off runner-up Liam Casey-Minick of Stadium by almost one second in 54.23. Sanchez was also third in the 200 individual medley as the top four in each event qualified for the Class 3A state swimming and diving championships, Feb. 16-17 at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.

Teammate Robert “RJ” Thomasberg placed fifth in the 200 IM and fourth in the butterfly. CK’s Matyas Kisiday finished third in the 100 breaststroke. Central Kitsap’s 200 free relay finished fourth.

The Cougars placed fifth overall in the team standings.
